Michelle Charness-Adams, Psy.D., LICSW

Psy.D. & Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Dr. Charness is a former assistant district attorney specializing in prosecuting domestic violence and sexual assault cases. Additionally, she has her Psy.D. in clinical psychology and LICSW focusing on trauma, attachment theory, and affect regulation.  She is an LCSW in California and New Jersey and an LMSW in Michigan. She has worked extensively with patients suffering from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse trauma. Further, Dr. Charness has a wealth of experience with PTSD, depression, anxiety, suicidality, and self-harm. She incorporates many modalities in her sessions, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, somatic work, and couples therapy. She is particularly effective at supporting clients working through past trauma and aiding them in finding resolve and peace within themselves, which is crucial to both individual mental health as well as the functionality of couples.

She enjoys working within the dyad of a partnership between two people and aiding them toward a unit of grounded communication. Inclusivity and remaining culturally sensitive to patients are of utmost importance to her. Dr. Charness is passionate about her therapeutic dyad with individuals and couples and always feels blessed and honored that she gets to do this intimate work with people. She is very present in the room and firmly adheres to the belief that while training is crucial remaining empathic and nurturing towards her patients is key to their well-being and psychic healing.

She has also contributed to several books, including Voices of Pain, Voices of Hope, Students Speak About Racism, and Learning Through Discussion. Finally, she currently has a blog on Psychology Today (under law and crime) regarding the intersection of law and mental health, focusing primarily on how legal rulings can impact our mental health.
