Honoring the Legacy of Our LGBTQ+ Community

Written by Katherine Waddell, LMFT

I often think about how incredibly dry my life would be without all of the amazing women who have made me who I am today.

I often especially think of all the amazing queer women who have been an integral part of my life’s journey. Although it turns out I am a pretty straightforwardly heterosexual gal myself (I tried so hard to be a lesbian in my 20’s in San Francisco, but it just didn’t really work out for me!), allyship with and love for LGBTQ folks in my life and in my work has always been just a part of who I am.

I break down crying often when I think about and listen to my queer peers and especially elders in our communities and what they have lived through. I cried buckets when Ellen DeGeneres came out on her show, and Melissa Etheridge put the “queer stamp” on her paperwork at the end of the show. I cried my way through Queer as Folk. So much of what I have learned about love and courage and strength, I have learned from queer friends and family, many of whom have been through so much that some of us can’t imagine: both because things were both so bad back then and often still are, and because they were/are the kind of brave that it’s hard for me to imagine.

It’s been really important to me as a business owner that we provide great services to our LGBTQ++ clients. We still have a long way to go there I know but we are on our way for sure. I am delighted to report that folks seeking queer clinicians and clinicians with a very high comfort level in working with LGBTQ teens, individuals and couples, can see them through our center. If you are looking for help in your relationship, or individually, please contact us.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to this beautiful singer, who wrote and sings this song for her wife.
